DEPARTMENT OF ANCIENT HISTORY
Prof. S.B. Lal
Interest Area and Specialization:
h Indo Greeks, Epigraphy and Archaeology
h Indo Greeks are historically known as Yavanas. The legacy of Indo Greek has endured for
several centuries from the usage of language, calendrical methods and Numismatics. The coinage of Indo
Greeks are considered as the most artistically brilliant of antiquity. The Hellenistic heritage and artistic
proficiency suggest a significant sculptural tradition. The classical style of Gandhara art or Graeco Buddhist
art is considered to be a distinctive iconographic influence.
h I have been Director and two times Co-Director of excavations at Gajnera, district Bareilly and Abhaipur,
district Pilibhit. Archaeology is the recovery and analysis of material culture, with this scientific study we can
reconstruct the past, understand the cultural history and document the changes in human society. Epigraphy
is the science of indentifying graphemes. Epigraphy has developed the historical significance of inscriptions
by interpreting the events recorded in them. My expertised area of research has been exploration of new
records and analysis of the facts of historical and cultural importance.
